      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Sovan Kong is a medical doctor. He is almost 40 years old now. Sovan is a graduate of our boys’ house in Cambodia. He came to us 19 years ago after his father was tragically killed. Sovan’s mum could no longer care for her eight children; in fact, Sovan missed two years of school during this period. Because of poverty, Sovan’s family had to split up, with his siblings being sent out to other people. Sovan was sent to his aunt, who, as it turned out, could not care for him. And then EMPOWER ASIA Cambodia discovered him. ———————————————————————————————————— Empower Asia and Empower Latin America are projects of EMPOWER INTERNATIONAL TRUST. EMPOWER ASIA was established in 1990 and now operates in several Asian nations. Some of these nations include; Cambodia, Thailand, Bhutan, Kolkata (India), and Nepal. 294 teenagers receive 24/7 care while residing in one of our 20 houses so that they may receive nutritious meals, come to grow in their knowledge of God, and also attend school (or tertiary institutions). This is all carried out in a loving family environment.</image:caption>

      <image:title>NEPAL - ASHA KENDRA - THE HOPE CENTRE</image:title>
<image:caption>Our boys’ and girls’ work have a particular emphasis;. That is for the development of impoverished young people who already show strong academic ability back in their villages prior to coming to live with us. At our houses, we provide good quality private education so that they then can move on into university education and eventually become career professionals who will contribute towards the good of the nation. Why do we have this aim? Because back in 2000 when we were considering commencing this work, we were told independently by very senior national leaders that the national church required educated professionals. And so we have sought to produce this accordingly. To this end, we have seen many become professional engineers, accountants, working in businesses, I.T. entrepreneurs, and lawyers.</image:caption>

Pleasingly, a number of them are involved in various Christian charitable works for the poor. along with working in their various professions, including chemistry teaching, one is a high-school principal, another is an internal auditor, and a number of them are software developers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our Nepali boys (pictured above) must sit an entrance examination to gain entry into our home. Though they are poor, most of these boys are very smart. We have genuine expectations that they will become positive Christian agents within their society. Nepal is experiencing a spiritual revival and so accordingly we are confident that these young men will in time step up and play their part in helping to lead this movement. This photo was taken in August 2025 and also shows our board chair and house father (standing right). All but four of these boys are studying at university.</image:caption>

We are very thankful to God, first of all. And we are very much grateful for your and your team's kindness to us and that you provided us with good opportunities which help us to build our careers and brighten our future. Thank you and your team for providing us with sponsorship years and years. May God be kind to you and your team. I have nothing to give you but I will always keep you in prayer. I have never thought I will go to college but God's plan is so amazing. For me, Kalimpong city is the best place for our growth, education and fellowship. My life has changed a lot after staying in Kalimpong... and it has been a good experience for me. Thank you and have a good day.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>I come from a huge family of 14 kids. Even when I was quite young, my dad was retired while my mum was a nurse. Most of my siblings did not stay at our home because they were older than me and had to go out to find money. My family was very poor. Sometimes we would have to eat plain rice alone with nothing else. At other times, we do not have enough rice so we would make a type of porridge and have to go out into the fields to find wild vegetables, berries, herbs, and leaves to cook and eat. Everyday things like salt, sugar, and oil were economically beyond us. We seldom ever had breakfast. At school, I had one book for several subjects. One side of the book was for Khmer language, while the other side was for all of the other subjects. My teacher would often scold my sister and I because we did not even have a pencil. After school, I worked for my neighbour making rice white wine. I was responsible for the yeast that went into the wine. I remember this well because my hands would burn and my skin would peel off. Have you seen Asian children who walk around city streets with a big bag collecting empty bottles, plastic containers, and aluminum cans to sell? Well, sometimes I was one of the kids. I also collected a certain type of fruit that some farmers would buy from me to feed their cows. I would try to earn as much as I could and give it to my mom and tell her to buy schoolbooks for me. Someone in my family used to beat me - it was like a leisure activity for them. Perhaps I was a target to release their stress and anger on. I would be beaten with motorbike chains, big sticks, and electric wire. Sometimes my head would be crushed between their legs. To this day, I still do not really know why this happened, but it was not fun. On top of this, I was also sexually abused by someone outside of our family.</image:caption>

      <image:title>KOLKATA</image:title>
<image:caption>Our young women are extremely at risk of being trafficked into the brothels of Kolkata. Our 16 girls are “tribal girls” from Murshidabad District, West Bengal State. They are impoverished country girls who are sadly very vulnerable to sexploitation and trafficking. As an example of this, read Maya’s story here. We have been told that their district is one of the two biggest source districts for trafficking in India. Of course, it would be preferable to keep the girls living within their family structure but unfortunately, because of stark employment prospects for rural girls/women and a prevailing culture of selling one’s child, sister, or wife into the sex industry, we feel that it is better for the girls to live within a safe house. At our home, we emphasise high school education so that they can discover future safe ways to support their families, and also for their own self-protection.</image:caption>

      <image:title>KOLKATA</image:title>
<image:caption>Poor people in the villages are most helpless when it comes to matters around employment because many of them are either fully or semi-illiterate. Normally, they are unskilled and cannot fit into any type of job that may be available in nearby towns and cities. All they know is how to till the field by using 1000-year-old traditional tools – a pair of oxen. The tragic part of this is that wealthy city people have bought most of the cultivable land plots surrounding the villages. They are the moneylenders too and use the local villagers as cheap labour, taking away their crops at harvest time. These landlords lend at interest rates as high as 40-50% p.a. Only in lenient cases will it be 30%. If the farmer’s crop fails, then forever he is enslaved as his debt increases from the exorbitant interest rate. The result of this is bonded-slavery, with many villagers silently bearing the pain of their debt that, in many cases, was inherited from their grandparents or even great-grandparents.</image:caption>

      <image:title>S.E. ASIA GIRLS</image:title>
<image:caption>Within Southeast Asia, we now have an incredible six girls’ homes where we disciple around 90 teenage girls. The various projects are located amongst staunchly Buddhist people who are fiercely independent. Over the years, many young people have graduated from our residences with some moving on into both ministry and professional work. While Thai society still has a stratum of poverty, it is not as great as say, 30 years ago. Unlike in previous times, girls are now encouraged to graduate from high school. So, instead of running safe houses, we are simultaneously both mentoring our kids and sponsoring them to complete high school and move into university study. Some of the homes are located within the lawless region known as the Golden Triangle. This is an area infamous for cross-border sex trafficking and is the world's number one producer of methamphetamine. We aim to see our young women rise above outdated expectations so that they can; graduate both high school and university, have a greater choice in who they marry, and when they might have children, and where they will live. Once our girls have completed their education, we expect that they will input back to their own people again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>S.E. ASIA GIRLS</image:title>
<image:caption>“Back in our village, there seem to be two stages for the girls once they have completed school. First, they try to help their parents in the corn and rice fields. They get married at about the age of 16 years. Then they become disappointed because of such a low level of income, they then, by their own free will, get picked up in vehicles by rich people and they cross the border where they become bad women. In my area, my family and others grow opium poppies (used in the production of heroin).” Since this interview, this girl has graduated from university, moved back to her people, and is now a school teacher. In her region, opium is so common that it is sometimes even used as a church tithe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Aw” is one of nine kids in her family. Her parents decided that, having completed Grade 4, Aw could give up on her education. But she persisted! So, she started attending school in a small town where she had to travel three hours each way just to attend. Obviously, this was not practical, so instead Aw rented a small room in the town and kept her education going up to the end of Grade 8, when her parents finally said, “Enough! Time to give up now.” And that was when we got her. Now, along with four of her friends from our girls’ house, she has successfully completed the National Year 12 Exams – nationally, it has a 60% failure rate. Aw has now just become a schoolteacher. How cool is that? And it gets better, because the girl standing to her right is also now a schoolteacher.</image:caption>

<image:caption>AZ started living with us from 2022. He is 18 years old and is studying in 11th grade. His mother is a Christian and his father is Buddhist. His parents make their family income by working on a rubber farm. Unfortunately, AZ’s father wastes his income drinking and only on his own personal wants. This means that the family is surviving only with the mother’s monthly income of NZD$200 (USD120). She has one day off per week. They eat just two meals a day. For mum to purchase rice alone for her family costs NZD$145 (USD87). So, what happens if a family member is sick or needs a tooth filled or must travel to another city or worse yet, someone in the family gets cancer? Well, presumably, cancer would be a death sentence. How can AZ’s mum pay for his school fees and a uniform? Well, she can’t. And that’s why we selected him.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sherpa means “people from the east”. The Sherpas are Himalayan people living on the borders of Nepal and Tibet who are renowned for their skill in mountaineering. Their population is about 250,000. Our Sherpa boys and Tibetan tribal girls are from Buddhist backgrounds, where Buddhist philosophy is mixed with obedience and respect for the spirits. The spirits are believed to inhabit their surroundings and control their world. Therefore, for the people, it is essential to make merit to the spirits. Their villages are primarily up in the hills near the Himalayas, and many of our kids hail from difficult economic and social backgrounds where abuse of alcohol is common. The boys’ work is based in Bouddha, which is in the Buddhist quarter of Kathmandu, an area famous among tourists to visit. But for our kids, it is simply everyday life. While we are a Christian organisation, we do not operate by criticizing other people’s religions or philosophies on life. Instead, we simply enjoy living under God’s grace and His unmerited forgiveness.</image:caption>
